The process of electropolishing is simply a finishing process, that removes a thin layer of material from the metal after the manufacturing process is complete. The process leaves a shiny, extremely clean surface finish, which makes it a fantastic material to use within cleanroom environments.

What are the benefits of electropolished cleanroom furniture?

There are many benefits to using electropolished steel within cleanroom environments. Here are just some of them:

Hygienically Clean Surfaces
- Electropolished steel is resistant to bacteria growth due to its smoother surface and the dissolution of embedded contaminants.

Less Particles
- As electropolishing is not a surface coating, there is no risk of the surface distorting at all, or peeling over time, contaminating the cleanroom space.

Easier Cleaning
- As electropolished steel has such a smooth surface, there is less friction and surface drag, resulting in reduced product adhesion and ease of cleaning. The smoothness of the surface also means that any microscopic peaks and valleys are levelled. There is 50% or better roughness average (RA) improvement on mechanically polished surfaces.

Improved Corrosion Resistance
- Electropolished steel offers enhanced corrosion resistance by preferentially removing free iron, embedded particles and inclusions introduced during manufacturing, including potential sources of crevice and pitting corrosion. The chromium to iron oxide ration is also increased.

Alongside the above points, electropolished steel has a chrome-like appearance, without the high costs and environmental disadvantages of chrome plating. Its appearance also improves surface reflectivity and brightness, known to improve heat and light reflection, which are important factors to consider when operating a cleanroom environment.
